Do you look into your closet and see chaos and confusion? Maybe you know it’s time to get it cleared out, but how to begin? Closet cleaning can either be a big chore or it can be a valuable experience. The easiest way to clean out your closet is to adopt the proper frame of mind.
The best attitude is a realistic outlook that it takes some time and focus. With determination, you’ll create the space to start having what you want in your life — a fabulous wardrobe of beautiful clothes that look terrific on you!
You may be overwhelmed by the prospect of cleaning out their closet. This is understandable because there is usually so much! Even clothes you’ve practically forgotten about. And it’s not easy to know where to begin with so many garments we’ve never worn or liked.
Clothes come into our lives in so many ways: gifts from well-meaning friends and relatives, garments purchased because of circumstances (they were on sale or we were in a hurry,) and the clothes that we’ve worn and loved (and sometimes worn out.)
Some people are emotionally attached to their clothes…even clothes that they don’t like or wear! Perhaps you were hoping that an outfit would make you feel beautiful, so if it did, consider finding more with similar styles and colors.
Memories associated with a garment often create associations and/or attachment. The dress you were wearing the evening your husband proposed, a birthday outfit, a special Holiday dress. A particular sweater you received as a gift may have sentimental value. These may be kept as keepsakes, but preferably not in your closet!
You may have a financial and a psychological investment in some clothes. Did you ever spend more than you wanted to, thinking, “Oh, I’ll be able to wear it for a long time”? Or did you ever justify spending a lot of money for a bargain? In the case of purchases that were downright disasters, it’s not unusual to feel disappointed, frustrated, or angry.
Cleaning your closet can involve letting go of the past. Even though the clothes just hang there, you may feel that by giving them up you are losing something. Realize that you made the best decision you knew how to make at the time. You won’t be doing this anymore after the Designing Yourself!
Some women are afraid to get rid of their clothes until they can replace them. You don’t have to be so drastic — it’s a process. I don’t recommend that you just throw away all your clothes, you can make these changes as gradual as you like. Just take it one step at a time and keep making progress.
There is a new wardrobe for your new life just waiting to happen. Once you get through this process of reevaluating your clothes, make sure that you eliminating some of the clothes that really aren’t right for you, you will find a new type of freedom. Before you know it, that closet will be full of new clothes that you love!
