Design implies intention.
Ask an architect, a computer software designer, or a curriculum designer and they’ll confirm this. There is an assumed intention behind designing something that it will serve its intended purpose, be practical and functional. Design can also imply aesthetics, beauty, or a pleasing combination of elements. Is it pleasant to the eye and the senses? Whether it’s a house, a car, or a meal, if it turned out beautiful, useful, and excellent — someone put intention into the design.
Have you considered designing your life?
How about the look for the life you want to live? You can actually design your Self. In fact, if you don’t, someone else, or simply the circumstances will do it by default.
To identify your intention for designing your Self, you’ll need to ask yourself the question, “What do I want?” or “What do I desire?” You can even ask directly, “What do I intend?” Identifying your specific criteria to be achieved is important first step. Developing your design plan requires knowing the right questions to ask and understanding the steps it would take to realize your goals.
Once you have your goals and intentions clarified, the process of Designing Your Self™ focuses you and moves you forward in a specific direction. Some people wander around and do lots of experiments to arrive at their visual expression, but they often find that this is really hit or miss. The best processes are tested, well-established, and systematic. That’s what makes them reliable. As with any great design process, Designing Your Self™ gives you access to a well-developed system that has helped thousands. It applies principles and techniques that have never yet been released in a book.
Since you are a unique individual, you’ll want personalized information.
The physical aspects of Designing Your Self™ require some analysis, ideally by an expert. Once that’s done, you will have the answers to questions like, “What really works visually on me and why? What effect do certain things have to onlookers? Why is it right for me? From line to design, texture to shape, color to style…again, these questions have answers. It goes back to harmony and congruence.
How does it work? It’s based on harmony. Simply stated: there are only five main design elements. Line, shape, scale, texture, and color. When each of these design elements are selected in a way that is visually harmonious on you, then all the parts go together…congruently on you.
Your overall look or image is comprised of details...and every detail from your hairstyle to your shoes has a message. So all these details combine to create one, whole message. It can be great, ordinary, or not so hot. When you can learn to choose all the details with reason and logic, then you can really enjoy creating looks you find satisfying and empowering!
The movie industry knows that details are a big deal. That’s why they have highly paid costume directors and spend huge budgets to get this right. No matter how well dressed an actor may be, no matter how experienced, the big movie studios never say, “Wear whatever you want – just use your good taste!” They know that can cost them a lot of money at the box office!
Every picture is comprised of countless details.
These details can make or break the overall effect. Details as seemingly minor as the shape of your eyeglasses — or the width of your belt — creates part of the image that people see. It forms the “whole” that has significance and meaning. The “whole” has a final, overall message will be interpreted by onlookers, who project their own interpretations on top of the core messages that could be agreed upon.
The good news about this is that understanding how it works and being able to craft the message of “you” is extremely powerful. It allows you to express the messages that you mean to convey.
Designing Your Self™ gives you a new set of distinctions.
You can use these distinctions to describe what you see in term of visual design. Designing Your Self has principles that you can use to express your intended look and feel.
